Google has announced the completion of a new web indexing system called Caffeine on June 8, 2010. With a whole-new algorithm, Caffeine can provide 50 percent better results than its predecessor. Also, it has the largest collection of web content that Google has ever offered before. Users can easily get the relevant content for their search queries, no matter what they are looking for.
The old search index system had several layers, some of which were refreshed at a faster rate than others. But, the main layer was updated once in every two weeks. In order to refresh a layer of the old index, the entire website was analyzed and there was always a significant delay between when a new page was found and when it was made available for users.
On the other hand, Caffeine analyzes the web in small portions and updates the search index continuously. Any new page added to a site or any update in content in the existing pages is immediately identified and indexed. Now, Caffeine can get fresher and better results for users.
Caffeine indexes web pages not only at a faster rate, but also on a larger scale. It processes hundreds of pages simultaneously and takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database. Moreover, new information is added to the existing database at the rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day.
The advent of Caffeine will take the search experience to the next level. This robust search index system not only yields fresher results, but also helps build a comprehensive search index. Google has also planned to make improvements to Caffeine in the future.

Very well explained. I first read about this and Google May Day last saturday, though I wasn't able to absorbed most of it's definition.
But what I fully understand about caffeine is that this new changes in Google's search algo is that it has a more effect to longtail search queries, which will unfortunately be not in favor of ecommerce site's deeper pages as well as authority sites that have pages ranking highly on SERPs just because of the authoritative power of its domain.
But thanks for clearing some if its important factors. This will just maintain Google's credibility in giving relevant results to search queries, where in turn sites are now much required to provide "total relevancy" on every content.

I believe they also added an algorithm for taking site's performance into account with this update. For one thing, we started getting more unique's with this update..
Very interesting post. I don't think Caffeine has been a great success.
These changes by Google will certainly shake up ecommerce websites and the organic traffic they receive. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and how the SEO adjusts to the changes.
But your right, a faster index is a boom for searchers and will take the search experience to the next level.

It's amazing the way Google search results change as you type in your search queries. I'm just getting used to not having to click on the search button after I've typed in my query.
Not a fan of google instant. Caffine was nice, but instant goes off of google suggest, which pulls up the weirdest most IRRELEVANT CRAP EVER! Thanks for reading :)
