Today, I was typing in the names of top online apparel retailers in the Google search box and surprisingly, some interesting suggestions came up. I’d like to show the screen shots of my search exercise, but before showing it let me tell you something about Google suggestions.
Google puts a lot of effort into understanding the users’ needs. If you are logged into your Google account and have enabled your web search history, while doing search, Google will throw suggestions by looking at your previous search queries, searches done by other users, sites in Google’s index, and ads in their advertising network. If you aren’t logged into your Google Account, no history-based suggestions are shown.
The Google suggestion tool is really a helpful tool for users as it saves them from typing in big queries, and search marketing professionals as it could be a useful and free tool for SEO keyword research.
Let us take a look at the screen shots of the search exercise on the top 5 apparel retailers.
1. Victoria's Secret
2. LL Bean
3. GAP Inc.
4. Zappos
5. Nordstrom
One thing you can observe here is that promo codes, coupons, and cards are common search terms for these retailers or brands.
Well, have you ever entered your site name in the search box and seen the suggestions thrown by Google? If no, then I think you should do it to now to learn about the suggestions offered by Google for your website.
Comment me on what does Google show for your site/industry/brand/name?

These are great stuff...noted... gotta go act upon it
When i tried my site i got a couple suggestions throw at me.
What a great suggestion, just checked google results for a couple of e-commerce stores that I have and you are right, both have vouchers as an option in the search suggestions.
Looks like I will have to generate some marketing and promotion of my web stores with some discount vouchers now.
Awesome blog post. This is a great "easy check" for smaller companies to learn what terms customers are using when they are searching for their site.
It also does a good job at highlighting the fact that online buyers are highly coupon and promo sensitive. Great food for thought.
The coupons and discount code idea is very interesting. I guess it makes sense really as the Internet has made a bargain hunter out of most of us. If you do not offer vouchers or coupons, perhaps this is an opportunity to increase footprint.
I know several online retailers that have "secret pages" on their site (or even within checkout) to go after the customers looking for coupons for their own stores. Basically, they are tapping into this customer behavior and bypassing many of their own affiliates (who specialize in coupon codes).
