SEO Keyword Research Tools are not only Useful, but are Powerful too

SEO keyword research is a mundane and familiar term for people who work with SEO campaigns, but many of us just jump in with both feet without understanding the meticulous process of selecting the best and relevant keywords, so we eventually end-up committing keyword research mistakes that breaks the whole campaign.

A successful SEO campaign is an outcome of effective keyword research! Carrying out a winning keyword research is no small task as there are many factors to consider before we embark on the process of selection. These factors include keyword count, competition, synonyms, keyword trends, and so on. Thanks to the SEO community and companies in this field, we have many keyword research tools that address each or a combination of these factors.

We, at Mobius, use these tools to research keywords for our apparel retailers and others. I am quite sure that you might have come across all or any of these tools earlier and also have read about them, but swept all of that information under the carpet without a thought.

With this blog post, I am going to bring them out into the open so that you are forced to acknowledge these powerful keyword research tools and even use them. :-)

1. Google Keyword Research Tools:

Google is keen on updating its search game every day which makes every search marketers seek new ways to optimize websites to reap the maximum benefit from the Google search channel. At the same time, the Big G is quite generous as it provides many handy tools and insightful data that makes marketers job easier to hit the target bang on.

a) Ad words Keyword tool:

Google keyword research tool is not just for your ad words campaign but is also helpful in indentifying keywords for your on-going SEO program. Some of the important features of this tool include:

a) Use synonyms
b) Advertiser competition
c) Local search volume (previous month)
d) Global monthly search (for Global SEO)
e) Keyword match type
f) Higher volume occurred (in a particular month)

b) Google Insight for search:

Insight search is one of the most wonderful research tools offered by the BIG G. With this tool, you can compare keywords across different regions, categories, date, search channel (other Google search properties like web, news, image, product), and so on.

c) Google Trends:

If you want to spot keyword trends, then you can apply this handy tool by using commas to separate keywords and predict their level of interest to see if it is rising or declining over a period of time in any selected regions.

d) Google Analytics Tool:

This GA tool can also be the best source to find keywords that users have used to find your site. With this tool, you can find intuitive information such as your target keyword’s effectiveness, list of long tail keywords, no. of keywords a page produces, etc.

e) Google Keyword Suggestion Tool:

The tool was introduced in the year 2008, and it enhances users Googling experience because when a user starts typing a keyword, this useful tool suggests related search terms (in a drop down of a search box), which reduces key strokes. This can help a search marketer to identify the related and relevant search terms to target.

2. Freekeywords.Wordtracker.com:

I think wordtracker is one among the widely used keyword research tools today. The free version of this tool has certain limitations, but it is still worth exploring. When you enter a generic keyword term, you’ll find top 100 terms associated with your generic term.

3. Nichebot Classic:
This tool is powered by Wordtracker.

One unique feature that I like about Nichebot classic  is that when researching keywords, it throws up a list of associated keywords with a plus (+) icon besides each keyword, which when clicked pops-up a window that gives an option to track the same keyword in classifieds, groups, blogs, tags, video, etc. This tool also shows 100 day keyword count, predicted daily searches in Google, Yahoo and MSN as well as overall global count along with pre-populated query in Google, Yahoo and MSN to check the competition.

4. SEO Digger:

SEO digger is one of my favorite tools that identify keywords for which a competitor ranks in search engine result pages. It is a great SEO competitor analysis tool with many intuitive data. Check it out for yourself.

5. Keyword Spy:

Keyword spy helps you track your competitors and their targeted keywords. For SEO keyword research purpose, simply enter a keyword and see related keywords with search volume/month, 20 organic competitors, misspelled keywords and more. I think keyword spy can be very useful not just for researching keywords but also to uncover the competitive landscape.

6. SEO Book:

It is just another popular keyword research tool that uses Wordtracker’s API. It is owned by a well-known SEO guru, Aaron Wall

Like most other tools, you have to register a free account to use this tool. It has many interesting features like daily search volumes, Google ad words price estimate, links to Google trends, suggestions, synonyms  and links to many other vertical database like delicious, Google blog search, etc.

7. Twitter:
We all know that twitter is a powerful online medium of communication for many netizens around the world. It has also become a preferred social media outlet for online retailers. You can find many interesting features on Twitter, one among them is “Twitter Search”.

If you’d like to know what the hot talk among tweeple is, then just hit twitter search and find the latest and interesting news that’s being transmitted every now and then.

When it comes to SEO, you may use this search option as a keyword research tool to indentify popular words associated with your seed term (keyword).

8. Delicious:

Delicious is a bookmarking service that can also become your favorite keyword research tool. You can find similar articles or sites that use tags to bookmark that page.

Great post! Proper keyword research is extremely important to SEO success since competition is usually very cutthroat in large industries. I'm a big believer in the Long Tail approach since ranking for extremely high traffic keywords could take a long time and cost a ton of money. One tool to check out is freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends which shows you an estimated number of clicks you'll get when you are #1 for a keyword, organically. Very cool!
