Meta Description and Keywords: Useful or Obsolete?

I am often asked by our clients and others about the significance of Meta descriptions and keywords in on-page optimization.

Many SEO professionals say that they are almost close to obsolete as they are not considered by search engines to rank websites on search engine result pages.

Here’s my view on SEO Meta descriptions and keywords.

Meta description has its own value and Google definitely cares about it. Meta descriptions are sometimes used as a snippet in the SERP (the text preview that Google shows on each result) if it matches to the users’ query, which can lead to higher CTR, but for sure it doesn’t have any influence on the organic ranking.

And, when it comes to Meta keywords, they were a magic solution in the early days of internet search, but now it has lost its distinction because most SEOers ill-treated this particular attribute which forced search engines to disregard it completely. You can read this blog post which contains a video speech given by Mr. Matt Cutts of Google.

Search engines like Google and Yahoo no longer take Meta keywords into consideration, but MSN (Bing) does. Even with Bing, Meta keyword attribute is no longer an essential ranking factor, but to score keyword credit, they (Bing) recommend using it positively.

Well, I personally think that adding relevant keywords and phrases in the Meta keyword tag section will never harm your SEO efforts unless you resort to keyword stuffing.
