I love fashion…I love clothes but when it comes to writing about apparel and accessories, it is a tough one. I have written about a host of hard category products like cameras, camcorders, televisions, you name it. It is a breeze, as you have a lot of information on their features and specifications, which you can weave into meaningful content.
When writing about apparel it is very important that you get into the psyche of your audience. The content should be vibrant, engaging, and interesting. You can’t sell benefits when it comes to clothes and fashion, you can only sell “the vision of looking good”.
When you are writing about electronics, the audience could be anyone from a tech geek to a person who wants to buy a gadget for the first time. The variation in content is in most cases is non-existent. You just have to describe the features and benefits in detail, so that a beginner understands the product and a geek is able to re-emphasize what he already knew.
In case of apparel, you need to be sure who you are marketing it to. Are you looking at a men’s clothing line or women’s. The tone of the content should be different and so should be the word choice. Men usually look for comfort, while women look for labels. The age factor also matters. Are you selling to Gen X or Gen Y?

The tone should also vary with the kind of clothes you are writing for. Is it formal wear, casual wear, sportswear, lounge wear, evening wear and so on. For instance, when you are talking about work-appropriate styles, a writer should emphasize on polished appearance, confidence, and so on. If evening wear is your product, you have to talk about elegance, style, and how it is the right clothing for a night out on the town.
Searching for the right keywords to plug into your content is another mean task. It is difficult to differentiate products in the apparel category as the attributes will be closely linked and there may be very little difference between products. So, getting unique keywords takes a lot of effort and time. Moreover, most keywords in this category have high search count and each product might have a number of synonyms, so selecting keywords that can boost your SERP ranking requires expert SEO handling. For instance, ts, tees and t-shirts are different ways in which people search for the same product. So, keyword search needs to be exhaustive.
A person writing about apparel should be imaginative and fashion-forward. You may not experiment with the styles you write about, but it should look like you know what you are talking about.
Writing content for apparel and fashion is not a piece of cake, but it isn’t rocket science either. Once you get the pulse of the audience, you can breathe easy and the flow will come. For search engine optimization, rely on a reputable apparel specialized SEO firm who can handle the techniques with dexterity.

this is one of those cases where it is important to sell a feeling.
that is always important in whatever you do but especially in this case.
Like you said you cant really sell benefits in this case.
seo is a little tricky in this niche, but the media can be your best friend if you can get a celeb to wear your t-shirts even if it is just to the store with no make up on.
I agree but this blog seems extremely generic. I can't say i benefited much from reading it. Saying you have to describe a feeling is very generic. I believe writing about apparel is describing why it make sense to wear whatever it is your wearing. What type of vibe are you trying to give off? What are you trying to convey to a person that is looking at you? Is it work or are you out on the town? Do you want to be noticed or not really? These are questions that should be answered in a good apparel blog. If your trying to send swagger mixed with a balance of sophistication, then you should checkout these links.

Robert, I agree the article was generic. I was trying to bring out the difficulty associated with SEO writing for apparel and not on how to write an apparel blog. But, I liked the pointers from you on what aspects to explore when writing such an article. I am working on a similar topic, will come out with it soon. Hope we can compare notes again then.
its nice and good
If you know your audience, you cannot go wrong. Very insightful, thank you for the post!
Thanks. I have a site selling hair dyes and am finding it very difficult to come up with unique content for 30+ different colours.
