SEO Scams – Be Aware, Stay Clear

Scam is an attempt to deceive a person or an entity by gaining full confidence, and it is a word that people want to steer clear off. SEO scams have no other meaning than cheating or swindling an online business owner or a website owner by providing dubious SEO services.

In the early days of search engines when AltaVista and Yahoo were ruling the search engine market, SEO was in its infancy but SEO scams were still prevalent but the numbers weren’t so alarming. Once SEO techniques became more popular and in demand, many fly-by-night companies/scammers with questionable SEO talent took this as an opportunity and entered the market to make money, and began providing search engine optimization services that were not worth a penny.

So, how can you identify an SEO scam? Given below is a list of claims related to SEO that is nothing but SEO scams.
  • Guaranteed Page 1 Rankings
  • We'll get you thousands of back links in X days
  • We know how Google algorithm works
  • SEO for just $100 a month!
  • Good ranks for long tail keywords
  • We'll submit your site to 1000 search engines in x days
  • We know the SEO secret sauce, but we won't share it with you
  • We have experience in your industry (and showing records and testimonials from different industries)
  • Quick visibility (Say within 24/48/72 hours)
  • Quick Submission to 100s of directories
  • We know a guy at Google
  • Our SEO services will deliver long lasting results

Do not get carried away by these statements. Hiring an SEO firm to make your website search engine friendly is a monumental decision. So, if an SEO firm tries to feed you any of these statements, don’t spare them another glance. And, more importantly conduct a research and understand what a typical SEO company does before you do any hiring...Here is a list of things that a true SEO firm should offer:
  • Analysis of your business, website structure and content
  • Advice and suggestions for website development
  • Advice and suggestions on redirects, hostings, use of rich media, javascripts and so on
  • Keyword research
  • Content development and optimization
  • SEO knowledge sharing
  • Off-site marketing
  • Local SEO

I totally agree. I have gotten so many calls and emails from "SEO firms" promising results that no one else could give me. I'm glad I ran the other direction.

Most SEO is scam. So, while you’re trying to figure out how to get up to $100 a day in ad-sense, these SEO Scam shysters are raking in more than $200K per year. I never knew SEO scamming was easy. But really they still do work. This is one of the best posts i have seen on any blog for a long time.

What's even more laughable than an SEO company guaranteeing a page one ranking in Google is for them to promise a #1 ranking or a top three ranking in Google. Probably the most important thing to emphasize to website owners shopping around for SEO services is that there aren't 1000 search engines (or even 10) that are worth having your URL submitted to. Google dominates over 80% of all search engine use on the Internet, and most of the remainder of search engine queries take place on Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.com. As far as free directories, there are just a tiny handful that are worth getting listed on, with DMOZ at the front of the list.

Probably the first thing I ever heard about hiring an SEO firm was to stay away from anyone promising page 1 results. That advice still stands today.

Unfortunately, there's still a lot of firms out there promoting results like that.

I guess the saying "if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is" is what to go by when dealing with these SEO firms and their schpiels about getting you a top 5 rank on Google within a working week!
I can't believe how much money they make from ripping people off! :(
